Lindane

Lindane is available in a 1% shampoo for treating head lice.

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. The shampoo should be applied for four minutes to the hair and scalp.
2. The product should be thoroughly rinsed out of the hair.

ADVISORY NOTES:

Lindane is slowly metabolized by the body, and is recommended for use only by patients who have been unsuccessful with other treatment options. Lindane products continue to be widely used because of their effectiveness against lice, but the potential for human neurotoxicity with misuse has led to their withdrawal in countries such as Israel. Because of this potential for neurotoxicity, it should not be used by those who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Furthermore, lindane products are not very ovicidal.
