Itching

The most common signs of lice are itchy skin and finding live lice or live eggs on the hair.

When an individual has head lice, they may also have a very itchy scalp. It may take two to six weeks after the onset of the infestation for the itchy symptoms to appear, as it often takes this long for the body to develop an immune reaction to the lice saliva and waste products. However, those who have had head lice before will develop itching within a few days of the infestation.

Secondary changes such as scaling and scratch marks on the scalp are common. These may result in a bacterial infection.

Pubic lice and body lice cause similar itching to occur. The itching in general is around the site if infestation

Even after the infestation has been cleared with treatment, ongoing immunological reactions may cause continued itching.
